BLEAK WINTER IN AFGHANISTAN
Catastrophic hunger and desperate poverty loom for Afghan families
Since the chaotic August 15th regime change in Kabul, an already war-devastated Afghanistan economy once kept alive by international donations is now on the verge of collapse.
The bitter cold of Afghanistan’s winter has small children huddled beneath blankets in makeshift camps. Sick babies in hospitals lie wrapped in their mothers’ all-enveloping burkas.
Long lines at food distribution centers have become overwhelming as Afghanistan sinks into deeper and desperate times, according to the Associated Press.
In late August 2021, Roots of Peace appealed to our international donor community to raise the necessary funds to provide blankets, tents, food and water to provide emergency services.
Through your generous donations, we raised over $27,000 to provide immediate assistance distributed by our trusted network of Afghans who have worked with us for over two decades.
The photos in the attached report clearly depict our impact.
Now, the World Health Organization is warning of millions of children suffering from malnutrition, and the United Nations says 97% of Afghans will soon be living below the poverty line.
Despite the many challenges, Roots of Peace continues to operate in Afghanistan. Currently, we proudly employ over 300 Afghans who are actively working to plant fruit trees and build green houses, providing critically needed income to feed their families. Further investment in agribusiness will allow Afghanistan to lift itself from the rubble and utilize the rich soils which provide 80% of jobs through agriculture. In the immediate future, we must offset the starvation by providing emergency food services for deserving Afghan families.
Your deductible gift will be matched for a limited time. All gifts, up to $100,000, will be matched by a generous donor until 11:59pm on December 31, 2021. Please donate here.
Thank you for planting the Roots of Peace in Afghanistan and worldwide.
With sincere gratitude,
