Happy Nawruz

In Afghanistan, Spring has officially arrived. All around the country signs are pointing to the changing season - the snow is melting, the trees are blooming and days are progressively getting longer. Perhaps most importantly, today is Nawruz – a Persian word meaning “a new day.” Nawruz, which begins on the day of the vernal equinox, marks the first day of spring as well as the beginning of the New Year in Afghanistan. It is a secular holiday that is celebrated by many countries and ethnic groups around the world.

Celebrating Nawruz

Throughout Afghanistan, preparations and celebrations for Nawruz are well under way. People purchase new clothing, make improvements to their homes, and gather together with friends and family for meals and conversations. A drink called haft meewa, which means seven fruits, is made in almost every household and is shared throughout the celebration. Nawruz is also a time to forgive the mistakes of others and reflect on new hopes and goals. It is a time for transformation and chance to embrace fresh beginnings.

A Bountiful New Year

Here at Roots of Peace, we are joining our Afghan colleagues and embracing the changing of the seasons and the spirit of Nawruz. We feel optimistic that the New Year will bring more peace and prosperity to Afghanistan. It is our hope that it will be bountiful for the farmers we work with, filled with fresh grapes, pomegranates, almonds and apricots. We look forward to continuing our work in all 34 provinces as we create jobs and improve incomes through agriculture.
